Guest host Joy Behar interviews author Gary Taubes about his new book and talks to a panel about the myths of dieting. Full transcipt: transcripts.cnn.com Transcend says tinyurl.com Typically solid at room or body temperature, saturated fats are sticky and can cause red blood cells to clump together, inhibiting their ability to carry oxygen to the cells. Saturated fats can also cause blood platelets to stick together and form blood clots that can cause a heart attack or stroke. Reducing consumption of saturated fat improves the health of most people. They provide support to your cell membranes and serve as precursors to a variety of hormones and hormonelike substances. A middle of the road approach to saturated fat consumption is to consume about 3 to 7 percent of your daily calories as saturated fat. www.imminst.org www.imminst.org

Taubes just came to my university and I got to hear him speak and what he says makes a lot of sense. There was a kid there that did his diet and lost 150 pounds so there must be something to? it

I? still dont get how ‘Dr. Oz” ( an entertainment Icon) gets away debating with Gary Taubes ( a medical journalist ) about the effects of Macro nutrients.

I think the protein makes you feel full longer as long as carbs aren’t there to have insulin store your? calories in fat cells, thereby depriving other cells of energy, thus makng your body hungry again. I also drink a gallon of water a day.

By the way, I’ve been eating pork chops, ribeye steaks, baked chicken with skin, fish (all organic-grass fed-hormone and antibiotic free). Moreover, I eat alot of low starch veggies and fruits. And what I’ve found I’m? satisfied with each meal for 4-6 hours before I might think of eating again whereas with the carb rich diet, I was eating every 2-4 hours cuz I felt hungry again.

Idk what that trainer and dr. Oz were talking about, I’ve been on a carb restricted diet for two weeks and have lost? 7 pounds already. And as for exercise, I’ve been doing one half hour high intensity weight liftin session a week as prescribed by drew baye, mike mentzer, or dr. Doug mcguff ( all here on YouTube to watch)- meaning I know the weight is coming off due to diet change not exercise.

@danscottbinns I am also a certified fitness instructor. Taubes is correct. ? Oz, Jillian and the conventional wisdom just set people up for failure. Great comment!!

@MelanieRaeMurphy? Yup. You get it. Me too. It absolutely makes sense and works because you don’t have to starve yourself. Well done!!!

Taubes is correct. Atkins was and remains correct. Eat like our ancestors, meat, poultry, fish, seafood, green leafy vegetables and you will be healthy. Jillian relies almost exclusively on starvation diets, which are NEVER effective long-term. Instead, eat plenty of good food, don’t go hungry, eliminate grain based carbs and you will improve your health. Once you lose some weight you will feel more like exercising.? I’ve done it and it works!!

@aluisious
The papers he mentions in his book ARE experiments that he’s reviewing. He brings up many that show that there aren’t any scientific basis to the common health practices today. He’s not just drawing his own conclusions, he’s making more public the opinions of the researchers who performed experiments that were buried under the overabundance? of people using bad science to (not) prove that fat is ‘bad’.
You really should read the book! It’s good.

Eating fat burgers will make you fat. If you eat fruits, vegetables and even substitute meat with veggie burgers, you will lose weight and feel cleaner. People don’t like that truth because they want to gorge on? their greasy garbage.

I used to love Dr. Oz, Jillian, and the Biggest Loser, but I tried their methods, and I had a little bit of success, but not much. I dont like to brag, but if I really try to do something, I stick to it and do it. I always got frustrated, because I would do what the ‘establishment’ said to do, and it didn’t work. Finally, I read about low carb, listened to Gary Taubes, Mary Vernon, Dr. Atkins and all of the other Low Carb advocates, and it made so much sense. I’ve lost 35+? lbs, and counting.

One day they will listen and understand, they cut him off and twist everything he says. I am a personal trainer and I specialise in weight loss, I could not praise Gary’s? book enough. Exercise has many benefits, but any personal trainer will regrettably tell you that nutrition is the key to fat loss.

Exercise DOES increase your appetite. If you’re diet contains bad foods, the exercise will be rendered USELESS. Instead? of realising this, the focus is purely around the blunt statement “exercise bad!”. Jillean Michaels is a fucking idiot for not realising this. Gary Taubes failed to explain this, and he also failed to deliver the message about natural source carbohydrates (i.e vegetables) SHOULD comprise the majority of your caloric intake. No sympathy for him.

Poppy does not represent by appearance the epitome of health and fitness. Most Biggest Loser contestants gain the weight back and are promoting some sort of weight loss supplement for a quick fix. Oz and Michaels refused to listen to the information Taubes presented. I believe Oz is afraid of losing pharmaceutical kickbacks and Michaels relies on the fact that her clients? will always need her because her nutrition advice will keep them on the weight loss merry-go-round forever. Taubes is absolu

@aluisious Gary Taubes is a science journalist, not a researcher.
However I believe he has been consulting with some medical researchers to get studies going? that will be based on his assertions.

I’ve not read the book and I notice that most of the comments here appear to be heavily fanboyish, but I’ll ask anyway: has Gary Taubes done any research of his own? You? can’t just read a bunch of papers and make some conclusions and call that science. Without experimentation, it’s just conjecture.
